The Manhattan Criminal Court located at 100 Centre Street is the main criminal
courthouse for New York County (Manhattan). Cases are heard in the various
courtrooms called “parts”. Arraignments generally occur on the
first floor in AR1, AR2, AR3, AR3A, and AR4. Desk appearance tickets are
arraigned in the DAT courtroom located on the first floor often in AR2.
Following arraignment, cases are generally transferred to Part A, Part
B, Part C, Part E (DWI), Part F (Felonies), or Part N (Drug Felonies).
Following indictment, cases are transferred to felony parts located at
100 Centre Street or next door at 111 Centre Street.

History

  • 1735: Bridewell Prison was a colonial era prison and court
  • 1838-1902: The Collect Pond area was the location of a courthouse called
    the Halls of Justice. This was and is the location of the subsequent iterations
    of the criminal court. It was also historically the site of a British Gallows.
  • 1902-1941: City prison was erected as an 8 story structure with conical
    towers along Centre Street.
  • 1941 – present: A massive new structure with a 5 story “crown”
    on top was a depression era recovery project The New York County (Manhattan)
    Criminal Court is in a building designed by Wiley Corbett and Charles
    Meyers and construction began in 1938. Along with serving as a courthouse,
    it houses part of the District Attorney’s office and Department of
    Corrections.
