ROR Release on own recognizance

ROR – Release on your own Recognizance

Being released on your own recognizance (ROR) happens when a court releases you following arrest for a crime and allows you to be at liberty while the criminal case is pending on condition that you will appear whenever your attendance may be required and will generally cooperate with the orders and processes of the court.  (NY CPL § 500.10).  Other conditions can be applied such as participation in treatment or that you obey an order of protection.

Getting released on your own recognizance can happen after you are given a desk appearance ticket or during your first court appearance or at a later time.  If a judge initially sets bail, you can make a motion to be released on your own recognizance at a later time.
